APNAC-Ghana hosted the 10th edition of the Global Diplomacy Lab Incubator Lab in Accra (16 – 19 June 2019) under the theme: “Global Power Shifts: Political and Economical Inclusion for the Next Generation. Collaborating to Realise the Potential of the Demographic Dividend”. The Global Diplomacy Lab (GDL), a German-based organisation, serves as a platform for a new and more inclusive diplomacy that goes beyond traditional politics and which brings together representatives of a variety of sectors and creative individuals worldwide to discuss politics on the meta-level (Global Diplomacy Lab, 2020).
The aim of the Incubator Lab held here in Accra was to investigate the potential for realizing the demographic dividend which is defined by the United Nations Population Fund as the economic growth potential that can result from shifts in a population’s age structure, mainly when the share of the working-age population (15 to 64) is larger than the non-working-age share of the population (14 and younger, and 65 and older) in Africa and critically study new collaboration formats that can foster the development of the continent and help achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) more effectively.
The Incubator Lab held in Accra focused on generating a better understanding of the global frameworks that govern the discourse on population dynamics and how these structures attempt to support economic development. In particular, we explored how the perspectives and narratives of different stakeholders influence the possibility of Africa achieving a demographic dividend.
The Accra Incubator Lab provided an opportunity for the African Parliamentarians Network Against Corruption (APNAC) to provide more insight into its work and the challenges faced. Africa is the continent that has the youngest population. This is an asset but can also be a time bomb if adequate measures are not put in place to ensure a bright future for the population. For Africa to develop, it needs educated and healthy people who can find original solutions to its challenges. Currently, the health and education sectors are in shambles all over the continent because the funds allocated have been siphoned and diverted into private pockets.
APNAC is dedicated to the fight against corruption to ensure that through good governance, Africa achieves the goals it has set for itself and is a place where all its people feel at home and want to stay.
The Accra Incubator Lab event registered the direct and indirect involvement at various levels of core local institutions in Ghana such as the National Population Council (NPC), the Ghana Centre for Democratic Development (CDD), SOPODIVA Language and Training Centre Ltd, the Street Children’s Empowerment Foundation (SCEF), the Society of Catholic Social Scientists (SCSS) the Ghana Chapter, among others.
